What they are
People-search sites compile public records (property deeds, voter files where available, court records, business filings) and commercial data into a profile for each person they can match. A typical listing shows your current and past addresses, phone numbers, age, and relatives. Some sell fuller “background reports” behind a paywall.
They're distinct from marketing data brokers like Acxiom and Epsilon, which don't publish profiles but compile and sell data for advertising.
Why listings come back
Opt-outs typically suppress a specific profile. When a site ingests fresh records (a new address, a new phone), it can create a new profile that isn't covered by your old suppression. That's why removal is a loop: check, file, re-check.
Work by family, not by site
Many sites share an owner and an opt-out system. The biggest example is PeopleConnect: one suppression is designed to cover TruthFinder, Intelius, Instant Checkmate, ZabaSearch and related sites. BeenVerified and PeopleLooker share a family, as do several public-record aggregators like FastPeopleSearch and TruePeopleSearch. Filing once per family, then verifying each site, saves a lot of time.
A sensible order
- PeopleConnect (TruthFinder, Intelius and others): form+email (PeopleConnect suppression).
- Spokeo: form+email confirm.
- Whitepages: form+phone verification.
- BeenVerified: form+email confirm.
- FastPeopleSearch: form+CAPTCHA.
- Radaris: form (account+email).
- MyLife: form or email privacy@mylife.com.
Then work through the rest of the opt-out guides.
Tips that make opt-outs stick
- Use a dedicated email address for opt-outs. Many sites send a confirmation link, and you'll want to find them later.
- Don't hand over more than a site needs. If a form asks for a phone number or ID, consider whether it's worth it for that site.
- Screenshot the listing before and after, with the date visible. Keep confirmation emails.
- Put a reminder on your calendar to re-check every few months.
- If you live in California, use DROP too. It reaches registered brokers you'd never find on your own. Our DROP guide →
What paid services do, and don't do
Removal services file these same opt-outs for you. Independent testing has found wide variation in how much actually comes down, so ask any service (including us) to show per-site evidence, not just a count of requests sent.
